The 2016 Chevrolet Camaro Is A Modern Car Which Can Be Called A Muscle Car
Ostentatious, supreme and marvelous! Is it like that or is it not? The new 2016 Chevrolet Camaro – an all new gen musclecar built to compete with the world’s favourite pony car is on track and the three superlatives used in the previous sentence should be enough to express the feelings of its creators! Although GM and all of its executives think that this one is a blast, the Camaro will have to pass the real test of excellence on the market. As far as we have heard about the car since it has been revealed, this new one just might legitimate all the fuss about it.
Starting with the exterior looks, the new Chevrolet Camaro isn’t exactly a whole lot different than before. It retained the lines of a true musclecar, meaning that the narrow windows, cocooned cabin and wide and strong rear wheel arches still compensate all the drama and the character of the muscle car. Although the 2016 Camaro looks similar to the fifth gen model, it is obvious that the exterior elements sustained some major revisions making the car look much more modern and much more on par with the styling excellence of today. That is why the narrow lights at the front (which honestly look a bit like those on the BMW i8, especially with LEDs), high beltline and rather large openings on the bumpers create a striking appearance accentuating the muscle car character of this angry vehicle. However, it seems that designers did not really look for inspiration in the previous Camaros, but in Fighter planes.
According to the one of the designers “design has been inspired by the fighter plane, in this case F-22 Raptor Fighter which provided linear, angular surfaces contrasted by beautifully executed and elegantly finished lines.” If you really try hard you might actually notice some of the styling causes taken from the Raptor and adjusted for this use. All in all, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro looks and feels like a grown up muscle car which has some attitude and character. Interestingly, the inside of the car isn’t just a makeover of the cabin from the fifth gen Camaro. An all new is created here and please enjoy its spectacularity on these pictures.
The all new design inside is different than that on the fifth gen car, but everything remained rather recognizable. Basically, they wanted to create an all new interior which will display all the crowning characteristics of the old cars, but it will make the new cabin appealing even for the youngest buyers from the “connected” generation. Of course, the process of creating a modern looking Camaro with a modern looking cabin is a tough job, so they had to make some radical changes to it.
With low high-belt roof, designers kept the real musclecar character of the Camaro, but the interior had to be adjusted considerably. That is why the vents found their place down below the console buttons and display. What’s more, the controls for the AC are integrated with the vents. By turning the rings around the vents temperature can be controlled and that is sort of a cool feature. The interior received major LED lights decorations. The driver can actually choose the color of light interior LEDs can project and there is even a function that enables the interior LEDs to continually change colors even while driving. This just might be too much, but hey, hipsters might like it if they ever come across a musclecar.
The technology under the sheet metal of the 2016 Camaro is profoundly modified, changed and adjusted in comparison with that what we saw on the fifth gen car. As it is based on the Alpha platform, Chevrolet used lightweight materials and lightweight construction which made this Camaro considerably lighter than before. In total, more than 200 lbs have been slashed away, but at the same time the structural rigidity of the vehicle and the stiffness of the chassis was improved. As always, improvements were made to the engines as well. For all those who want a Corvette powered Camaro, the new 2016 Camaro SS is the way to go. It features a magnificent 6.2 liter V8 developing 455 HP and 455 lb ft of torque which we suspect can provide it with 0 to 60 time in about 4 seconds. The SS is equipped with Brembo brakes as standard (Magnetic Ride Control active suspension is available) and these kinds of brakes can be had even with the less powerful engines such as 3,6 liter V6 which develops 335 hp and 284 lb-ft of torque.
These are nice figures, but the real question is, can the new Camaro compete with the might of the Ford Mustang EcoBoost!? You bet it can. With the two liter turbocharged petrol four banger, the least powerful Camaro has an engine developing 275 HP and 295 lb ft of torque (more than almost half the size bigger V6). Interestingly, Dodge is the only one in the muscle car game without the turbocharged four banger for its Challenger.
All in all, the 2016 Chevy Camaro brings a dash of refinement unseen up until this moment on this highly popular car. We can hardly wait for the ZL1 or the Z28.
