Big Brother Alert – A Ford That Won’t Let You Speed

Right this very minute Ford is selling a vehicle in the UK that reads speed limit signs and resists the driver exceeding the posted speed. Is it headed here next to kill our fun?

While it’s intended to reduce traffic fines in the UK, can you image the safety mongers in the US getting their hands on this?

Most likely wide-scale rioting would erupt. After all, to many Americans the right to exceed the posted speed limit is the unwritten eighth article of the United States Constitution. While wholesale adoption is probably unlikely in the US,  there may be some fleet operators who would see value in such a system. And Ford has said they are looking at rolling out the system in other countries.

According to Ford of England “The system monitors road signs with a camera mounted on the windscreen, and slows the vehicle as required. As the speed limit rises, the system allows the driver to accelerate up to the set speed – providing it does not exceed the new limit.

“Drivers are not always conscious of speeding and sometimes only becoming aware they were going too fast when they receive a fine in the mail or are pulled over by law enforcement,” said Stefan Kappes, active safety supervisor, Ford of Europe. “Intelligent Speed Limiter can remove one of the stresses of driving, helping ensure customers remain within the legal speed limit.”

Or it could add stress by taking just one more element of control out of an activity we all enjoy: driving.
