2018 Porsche Panamera Sport Tourismo Debuts in Geneva and it’s the Hottest Wagon Ever
I’m going to start this article off with a confession. I don’t care for wagons. I also don’t care for hatchbacks. Don’t get me wrong, there are some incredible vehicles out there labeled hatchback or wagon. It just isn’t a style I usually like. That is, until now with the 2018 Porsche Panamera Sport Tourismo. Debuting in Geneva it has completely changed my mind about how a wagon looks and performs.
Of course, Porsche isn’t going to call it a wagon but I’m not sure what else to call it. Honestly, it doesn’t matter what you call it because the design is a perfect blend of design,functionality and performance. It starts with the standard Panamera body and actually keeps a lot of the same specifications. This includes the 198.8-inch length and 76.3-inch width but is 0.2 inches higher (56.2-inches). The difference however, is in the rear. Instead of the bulbous back that was made fun of so well by Top Gear when it was first introduced, the Sport Tourismo has a gentle slope to the roofline. The back glass contrasts this with a sharper decline to the rear. It’s like Porsche combined the front ¾ of the Panamera with a squished version of the rear from the Macan. This is what makes the 2018 Porsche Panamera Sport Tourismo so beautiful.
As with all Porsches, they aren’t going to do the new Sport Tourismo model halfway. They are releasing it with 4 available models; Panamera 4, 4S, 4 E-Hybrid, and Turbo. The Panamera 4 Sport Tourismo is the “least” capable of the four models; though its 330hp V-6 is more than powerful enough to launch it to 60mph in just 5 seconds. Panamera Turbo models come with the brilliant 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 producing 550hp and a 3.4 second 0-60 sprint. In between, the 4S and E-hybrid have a 2.9-liter twin-turbo six with the E-Hybrid getting an extra 136hp electric motor.
In addition to the outward appearance, Porsche added an adaptable spoiler to the rear of the roof. This technological beauty has three stages depending on the driving style settings and can generate up to 110 pounds of downforce to the rear axle. That roofline doesn’t just provide a better look though. On the inside it allows a 5 seat capacity (2+1 rear) or a comfortable 4 seat option for those who don’t want to haul everyone. The slightly heightened roof will allow those occupants a little more headroom and an easier fit. It’s a no-brainer that cargo room has increased but only by 0.7 cubic feet with the seats up and 1.8 cubic feet with the seats down. Of course, Porsche offers a plethora of options which include a luggage compartment management system which probably won’t be cheap.
Pricing and Availability
So in reality, did this change the Panamera very much? Well, not really. But it does look at HECK of a lot better. So much so that I doubt Clarkson, Hammond, and May will cover their eyes from it if one drove by. What the buyer gets in the 2018 Porsche Panamera Sport Tourismo is a gourgeous looking wagon with a plethora of available powerplants and a slight increase in cargo capacity. Is it worth it? Well the current Panamera ranges from $85,000 – $146,900. In comparison, the Sport Tourismo starts at $96,200 and goes up to $154,000 with availability in the spring of this year. With about a $10,000 premium it’ll be up to the buyer if that price is worth it. If I could afford one, I would say yes because that is one sexy wagon and I’m not afraid to admit it.
