2018 Ford Mustang Convertible Got Much The Same Changes As The Coupe

A week or so after the release of the 2018 Ford Mustang, the Dearborn-based manufacturer released first pictures of its roofless brother. Showcased at shows in South Carolina and Kentucky, the newest addition to Ford range retains much the same changes compared to the Mustang Coupe. Famed pony car thus received a reshaped fascia with slightly lowered grille, deeper hood layout and reshaped front bumper.

The front also saw the addition of standard LED lights. Now, every ‘Stang will receive fine headlights and running day lights. It was about time. Obviously, the changes at the back aren’t as profound, but they do include slightly different rear lights. Three separate pieces of the lights aren’t vertical anymore but have angled edges. Is it just us or the car looks a bit narrower at the back thanks to this. Nevertheless, four exhaust tips do it justice.

2018 Mustang Convertible continues with basically the same roof mechanism. It fails to deliver as the roof mechanism on the Camaro. While it can open or close in 10 seconds (this is fast enough), it cannot do it while moving faster than 3 mph. We have not made a mistake. It really is three mph. Camaro roof can open or close up to 30 mph. It is a nice roof, though. Single latch system works well and the roof itself is well insulated.

As it was with the Coupe, Ford dropped the V6 engine for the Mustang Convertible as well. Thus, the buyers have a chance to opt for the 2.3 liter EcoBoost or the 5.0 liter V8 naturally aspirated unit. Ford did fiddle with engines and improved them in some sense. While they stay silent on the power and torque output we do know they increased the power to the V8 and upped the torque for the EcoBoost. Both engines come with a 10-speed automatic tranny. However, one can opt for the twin-disc clutch 6-speed manual too.

Changes on the inside are again translated from the 2018 Ford Mustang Coupe. They include an awesome 12-inch instrument display behind the steering wheel. Ford did, in fact, make a number of interesting and important changes in the cabin. Aside from the instrument display, drivers will now enjoy new upholsteries, slightly different and plusher materials. Top grade cars are getting hand-stitched leather on the dash as well.

Safest Mustang To Date

As for the safety, Ford went all-in with this one. This translates to Pre-Collision Assist with pedestrian detection, distance alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, and Driver Alert System.

And yes, the suspension on the convertible got a different setup compared to the Coupe. They had to do it due to different torsional rigidity and more pounds overall.

Expectedly, Ford added new colors – Kona Blue, Orange Fury, and Royal Crimson. 12 wheel designs grace the options list as well. You’ll know much more in the fall when Ford launches the 2018 Mustang Convertible on the market. For now, they apparently only have a few working pre-production demo cars. And they have to hit every of the 50 states for promotional purposes.
