The 2012 Mazda MX-5 GT4. Racing History in the Making.
Who knew that when Mazda came up with their ever so playful Zoom Zoom theme, that they would continue live up to that claim. For 2012 Mazda has tricked out one of their popular rides for a certain group of enthusiasts around the world.
For 2012, Mazda has tweaked the Hell out of their MX-5 for the race world to enjoy. The new 2012 Mazda MX-5 GT4 race car is reminiscent of the days of old, when Mazda MX-5′s aka Miatas were first introduced to the racing world by their owners, and few had corporate sponsorships. The MX-5 has been a sometimes cute, and a sometimes brutish car that could be driven by anyone, anytime, anywhere. The belief was to make a car that would be simple to maintain, and even easier to drive. The MX-5′s first Generation came stock with a 1.6L Inline four cylinder motor that was very raspy if driven with the 5 speed manual. As popularity caught up with the Miata, so did the need to race it, and that’s why we are here today.
Mazda has once again put forth something of true greatness, with their new race car. The 2012 Mazda MX-5 GT4 is pure, unadulterated, unrestricted, unrelenting, racing exhilaration. Mazda pretty much went all out, and pushed the corporate envelope as far as they could when they made the GT4. They started with a new MX-5, and then threw in a turbocharged 2.0L, 4 cylinder motor that normally would make around 167hp, but now makes a staggering 320hp, and around 298lb ft. of torque. Making this MX-5 an even bigger problem for all of the racers in the GT4 Racing Championships. The 2012 Mazda MX-5 GT4, was given the full race treatment, just before the motor was dropped in. Every GT4 was stripped, of all it’s non-racing essentials, such as excess body paneling, carpeting, stereo, AC, and the factory gas tank. In it’s place, went Carbon Fiber paneling, fully adjustable suspension, revamped steering box, a much quicker 6 speed sequential gearbox, and the icing on the cake, a full racing spec roll cage. It just sounds awesome doesn’t it?
This 2012 Mazda MX-5 GT4 was built with history in mind. The overall style, and grace of the GT4 is that of the classic race cars of the early 60′s. The MGB, the Trident Spitfire, and the Lotus Elan were channeled in some way shape or form. This race car was also a homage to the GT4 Racing Series. The engineers at Jota Racing decided that the MX-5 would be the perfect platform to achieve racing greatness. So after everything was completely welded, assembled, buffed, and polished the sticker price needed to be slapped on it. The 2012 Mazda MX-5 GT4 is going to cost the hard core personal racer 125,000 GBP, that translates to $189,000 US dollars. Whew! Well, when it’s all said, and done who ever is lucky enough, to own this GT4, will have no choice but to use this race car to it’s fullest potential. Which could only lead to nothing but, pure racing awesomeness.
