Fine Tuned 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI & Golf R Get More Power
Golf GTI is the one with the power bump. American Volkswagen Golf R remained at 292hp. European did not, however.
2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI and the Golf R are getting some serious upgrades. Fine machines, as they are, are getting upgrades in the engine department, new cosmetics, and better infotainment system. Probably the same infotainment you could see in the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas. Hot Hatches has already been improved for Europe where buyers of the Golf R can rejoice. Euro 2018 Volkswagen Golf R specs confirm it will have a 306hp engine. More than ever. Not for the US, though. Volkswagen upped the boost from 17.4 to 20.3 psi only for the Euro version. The US is still getting a 292hp hot hatch.
But that is not all.
The 2018 Golf R did get a retuned transmission. And not much more in terms of mechanical upgrades actually. Europeans did get an option for awesome Akrapovič exhaust and top speed limiter deletion. Now, the R will pull 166 mph.
New 2018 Volkswagen Golf GTI Gets More Power For The US Too
You read that right. Finally! Volkswagen upped the power on the entry level 2018 Golf GTI to 220hp. Also, buyers can enjoy shorter gearing, new bumpers front, and back, new headlights and taillights, as well as more personalization options.
Expectedly, the three-door version is still out of the question for the US. Volkswagen ditched the concept back for 2017MY. And we would not be surprised if they stop producing three-door Golf altogether when the new gen car enters the business.
As CarandDriver reports, Volkswagen stays open only to the Golf R. That is the most powerful and the fastest. Golf R400 is a no go.
“That was under the old leadership. Those were car guys,” anonymous Volkswagen insider said. “Things are changing under new management. But we can do with 310 [Euro spec] horsepower what others need 380 horsepower for.”
So that’s that with the Golf GTI and the Golf R.
Interestingly, that mad Golf GTI Clubsport S probably remains the fastest Golf of all time despite these upgrades for the GTI and the R. Fine with us.
