1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing At Auction; Starting Bid Of $900,000 (With Video)

We rarely see any 300SL Gullwing models out there because they’re a rarity, even on collector auction blocks. This 1955 Mercedez-Benz has both its vintage and historical ownership driving its price. Later this year, the car will go up for auction with the opening bid set at a jaw dropping $900,000.

Historical Ownership

Sigurd Nygren was the owner of this classic car and he made some small modifications in his time with it. He made his name being one half of a pair of twins who were assistant engineers on ships in WW2. The pair survived their time keeping the power plants of warships running for the war effort.

Modifications and Original Parts

The changes made to the car aren’t extensive but they certainly do add personality to the 300SL Gullwing. A toggle switch now controls the reverse lamps and he also added fog lights. On the interior, a six speaker sound system moved in alongside a defroster fan for the windshield. The last of his additions include a thermometer and altimeter as well as an aircraft chronometer.

Beyond those, the rest of the car is in original condition and has never been restored beyond its maintenance. Its 3L engine is completely intact and still attached to its original four speed. The independent suspension is still in good shape at all four corners while the factory upholstery has seen better days.

Headed to Auction

The Mercedez-Benz 300SL Gullwing is a piece of automotive history as well as having the ownership history. These make it a rare vintage machine which is sought after by collectors. Gooding & Co. will see it hitting the block later on this year with its starting bid of $900,000.
